 "First Light"

When sunrise casts yellow glow over a quiet, forested lake, or when dusk settles on a river or marsh, you may see a great blue heron standing in all its majesty. Stalking its prey, the great blue lifts each foot stealthily from the shallows without a ripple. Herons may stand still as a stump until its victim comes by. Usually this big blue wader is rewarded for its patience with a small fish, frog or crustacean. Dinner seized and gulped down on the spot. If I happen to miss this fishing expedition, I often find the evidence in the great blue heron's large footprints at the bottom of the lake.
